Ondoy
Ondoy was officially the worst typhoon in 42 years to hit The Philippines. We shut down office operations today in deference to its aftermath. We were not alone. Some local market call centers also shut down phone interface (for Philippines end-users) as citizens (perhaps like their employees) tried to gain ground on a Monday that was also the first dry and sunny day after the typhoon.
For some of our employees, they faced the shock of their lives as flash floods submerged their homes and property (like cars) before they can even conceive a response. We are all grateful that despite it all, our employees and their families have their life and health. We trust that with perseverance and a can-do attitude, they can successfully rebuild their lives.
Our minds and hearts are truly with those who experienced exceptional suffering under Ondoy. Class and circumstance did not matter as homes and people of all backgrounds fell prey to the randomness of this natural calamity. Many lost lives, many more were injured. If you have not yet heard, this typhoon brought 400+ MM of rain (for reference, Hurricane Katrina brought 250MM). This should give one an idea of the massiveness of this event. It is amazing to find that the people of hard-hit Marikina and Rizal (and other cities in Metropolitan Manila) faced this challenge with resilience and resourcefulness, resulting in a very high survival rate.
But still, there is very real suffering and work to be done. And so, we ask you, our dear friends and readers, to consider helping Ondoy's victims in any way you find agreeable. Google.com/Ondoy is a good starting point to learn more. Donations of food and clothes would provide immediate relief, cash would help too. We suggest directing your contributions towards effective consolidators like Ayala Foundation.
It is our prayer that the people of Metro Manila will soon clear their minds and focus on the vision of a prosperous and restored metropolis. We believe we will bounce back with a vengeance. After all, there is that matter of the general expectation that Metro Manila will become the 30th most prosperous metropolis in the world by 2020 (today, we are 42nd with USD 108 Billion GDP; Rio de Jainero is currently 30th).

Android for HTC Touch Pro
I like my Windows Mobile 6.1 / HTC Touch Flo experience; but, I must admit that I am very curious aboutGoogle Android and that I am open to using it as my O/S.
Quick Thoughts
Good Morning from Manila! It's a nice bright Saturday enhanced by a marathon of NatGeo Adventure's curiously interesting reality program Bondi Rescue

Really glad that ETC 2nd Avenue (a Philippine Cable network that mostly funnels American / British TV shows) is now airing "Live From Abbey Road". Saw an episode featuring the band "Muse"; the finale was very good. I reckon that video is at least a year old though.

Been hearing so many good things about Bohol. Haven't seen it for myself. That's a new addition to my to-do list (if I could live with being away from the city for a few days).

I've replaced my Nokia N96 with an HTC Touch Pro. The Touch Pro has been very very satisfying - especially since Google accounts (including Google Apps) can now be synched with a Windows Mobile Phone. Specifically, you can sync your contacts and calendar. Nothing for tasks (that I know of) and e-mail is still processed through POP. The sync service called "Google Sync" makes your google service work pretty much like Microsoft Exchange. Back to the phone - on the downside: screen's kind of small for my preference and I'm missing what I consider to be the N96 killer app - Mobile TV. Plus, I'm still familiarizing myself with the O/S (Windows Mobile 6.1 enhanced by HTC Touch Flo). I like that it's a touch phone with a qwerty keyboard and I like the black design. I'm kind of peeved though by the arrangements I had to make to my contact list; it took so much time! Recall that Google / GMail doesn't make name field distinctions. The phone (because it's a Windows Mobile phone) does. Can you imagine what I (and perhaps many other end-users) had to work out? I had to rework my entire contact list (of X thousands of names) into 2 simple components. It's harder for people like us in Asia or Europe since we don't all have two-word full names. We're not all John Smiths or Jane Does. We have last names (and first names) composed of two or more words! What's happened is that names like mine "JP de la Vega" get saved in the phone as First Name-John Middle Name-Pauldela Last name-Vega. And from the phone - one can't search middle names. So to make things work with my phone, I had to standardize how my contacts names are saved on gmail. People with long last names (like mine) had to be saved as"JP de_la_Vega". The result - Windows Mobile detects the last name contents (like la or vega) but Google doesn't. Still not a perfect situation, but I can live with it. Thing is, I saw from blogs and vlogs that the Touch Pro can be hacked to run Android. I'm not sure how but that's interesting. I'm curious to find out if anyone in the area authoritatively knows how already. All in all though - the summary point really is - the device inspires and enables real productivity.

President Obama on Leno was interesting. Did he really get through?

Blogging vs. Sharing
You may be wondering why we don't blog too much here. We've decided to reserve that kind of thing only for important company announcements and the occasional opinion release. I for one, am a relatively private person and I think that's pretty much the culture here too. But that doesn't mean we don't love information and sharing information.
I really love information. I am an information junkie for the most part. I am a naturally curious person (like most humans) and have had the privilege of having access to knowledge resources that satisfy. But in era of business blogging; perhaps one has to note the difference between blogging and the compulsion to share news or information.
So here's the point, really - if you want to find something on a daily basis, our blogs might not be the best source. See, for some time now, I've been using Google Reader to read and share articles of interest from all kinds of web resources - blogs, media outlets, etc. It's best you check my Google Reader Shared Items page which is updated more or less everyday with concerns that are of interest to our company.
But nonetheless, please stay tuned to our blog. As we get even busier (and perhaps dedicate an institutional communicator to the task) - our blog will be even more vibrant and active.
Until then, see you at my Google Reader share page - hopefully everyday.
